I am soup

Daddy — this isn’t the sea. This is soup, you know?

It’s got salt in it, it’s got fish in it, it’s got shellfish in it, it’s got seaweed in it. Anyone can come here whenever they’re hungry and have a drink of soup, Daddy. And it’s everywhere, too. It’s huge. You can drink as much as you want, Daddy.

Even when we go on a picnic, we can just take plain rice, Daddy — then we can go to any beach and scoop up some soup. Even our Jimmy will like it.

“Oi, Jimmy, Jimmy — you like soup, right? You can drink all you want and eat all the fish.”

So good. I love this soup.

Kayal, today I went for a walk with your son, yeah? Wanna know what he said?

He says the sea isn’t the sea at all. He reckons the sea is soup.

Kids’ imagination, I know… but wouldn’t it be great if the sea really did turn into soup? Everyone could eat. Anytime they like. And then if I come home late, you can’t tell me there’s no dinner. I’ll just go drink some soup, he he!

What’s that, uncle? What did you ask?

Not lost in thoughts, uncle. Your son said today the sea is soup. Apparently your grandson said it to him.

If the sea was soup, it’d be pretty good, wouldn’t it? Every morning I wouldn’t have to get up in a flap making brekkie. I could actually rest. Freedom from the kitchen. that’s what I was thinking, uncle. It will be a big relief for me.

But then again… if you drank the same soup every day, you’d get sick of it, wouldn’t you? your son will still be standing over me going like , “I am bored. Did you cook this? Did you cook that?” Isn’t it uncle.

Boss, even our party people wouldn’t have thought of something like this, boss.

My grandson says the sea is soup. If everyone has the same food, there won’t be ups and downs here. No graded inequality. Everyone will be equal. If food becomes common property, there’ll be no looting. No need to belt the next bloke just to win.

Thinking of our party’s principle of equality — everyone gets everything the same, right? If the sea becomes soup, equality will sprout here, boss. That would be a dream come true!

Nithyaguru, forgive me. That fellow who popped in and just left — yeah, that fellow who spoke about equality. He’s from our party. Absolute clown, Guru. Thirty years and he’s still only a councillor — this is why.

Sea as soup, is it good? Everyone from every race drinking from the same pot? What are we then — chopped liver? Can we go and drink with other races?

He thinks what we say on stage is real life. If everyone gets food, who’s going to vote for us, you tell me? Those blokes won’t even remember we exist.

Other people’s hunger and starvation — that’s our capital. When people stomach’s dried up, if we flick them five hundred bucks, they’ll vote for us. I’ll build a nice little fortune too. And you can be my aide.

God is the universe. We are a droplet of the universe — and so, a droplet of God.

Enlightenment is not realising you are that droplet. It’s realising that the force that drives us from inside is God… and hunger.

Hunger is the first spring. And so, God was born in the beginning — he knew himself as hunger. Because he knew hunger, when he made the world, he made the ocean into soup — food.

He shaped the body as an earthen pot and placed within it the living spark called hunger. The power that moves life is seeking. Hunger is the journey of seeking.

But because of wicked men who do not know God, the sea became poison — a wasteland no one can eat.

God is truth. Our ashram practices will lead you to him. Just as God made the sea in the beginning, we too will make it soup again.

May the blessing of Nithyaguru be upon you. Om Shanti.

My son! At least now, admit God is real.

I brought you to the ashram because I thought hearing Nithyaguru would knock some sense into you. Did you hear that — the mercy of God? He made humans in this world, and humans got hungry, and for that hunger he made the sea into soup.

We’re the ones who ruined what he made.

If there is creation, there must be a creator. That creator is God. If you walk around this lingam founded by Nithyaguru a hundred and eight times, you’ll get good sense. Your mum and I pray for that, every day.

Comrade, you lot need to change, comrade. My mum and dad are exactly like you. I don’t even know how to reform them, comrade.

Nithyaguru, lingam — honestly. Common ownership and rationalism are the two eyes of society, comrade. On a materialist base, idealism is the first trap, comrade. And the last trap is our own thinking, comrade.

God is the foundation stone of capitalism, comrade. Is God for everyone? No. We don’t oppose God — we oppose capitalism. But because God wanders about like a boss, we oppose him too, comrade.

Now look at you — you’re begging at a temple gate. If, like they claim, God could make the sea into soup, couldn’t that same God give you one cup of soup right now and save you from hunger?

This is God’s capitalist monopoly mindset, comrade. No matter how many lingams you walk around, it won’t be fixed, comrade.

Fuckhead!  — what are you talking about? Idealism, capitalism ? Keep you ism’s with yourselves. What did you say? doing laps around the bloody lingam, fuck you!

I’m the one begging here, and you are yapping “comrade” at me like you’re my saviour. God made the sea into soup, did he? What a joke.

So he made humans, then he made hunger, then for hunger he made the sea into soup… why the hell? He could’ve just made us without hunger, couldn’t he? Better yet, he could’ve not made us at all.

What’s with all the drama?

What’d you ask? Ask again. If there’s creation, there must be a creator?

Go fuck yourselves!.

And if the creation does something wrong, shouldn’t the creator be the one copping the punishment? Why are we the ones being punished?

How many times do you want to dunk God in a frying pan and sizzle him, tell me.

Also — what are you, a TV bloke? No? YouTube? Whatever tube, whatever channel — go on, go film it.

Just… before you go, see that shop over there? Buy me a soup and hand it over.

Hi guys, welcome to the “Food in the hood Channel”.

We’re proud to try every single food in the world and bring it to you. Yesterday we saw a beggar outside a temple. When we spoke to him, we found out he’s basically a soup connoisseur.

What he told us made us go and check — and turns out, eighty nautical miles out from Chennai, there’s one particular spot in the middle of the ocean where the sea is actually soup.

And the taste? No soup on earth comes close.

There’s even a legend that Krishna, Buddha, Jesus and the Prophet — all the holy ones — have tasted a drop of that soup.

And here’s the big one: the first one lakh people to like our channel — we’ll pick five by lucky draw and take them to the Sea Soup Spot.

This award goes to our writer, Fiction Tiger (Bubu).

On a difficult spiritual journey, travelling as one of the five to a spot eighty miles out from Chennai, the idea that surged up from his creativity turned into Sea Soup, slipped into the human belly, and went on to explore the tender emotions of human minds…

…a magical realism, postmodern novel that stretches on and on. His latest work.

Our government has decided to include an excerpt from his novel in this year’s Year 5 textbook.
